The City of Rochester Public Works Department has changed the parking access on the west and east sides of Calvary for the foreseeable future. This arrangement will likely be in effect until 3rd and 4th Avenues are vacated to become private property of the Mayo Clinic.
If you access 4th Avenue from 2nd Street, at the intersection where the Baldwin Building sits on the southwest corner, you will see that on the east (Calvary) side, there are now orange signs that say Calvary Church Parking Only. On the west side (Ozmun Building) there are now “No Parking” signs. Also, on 3rd Avenue across from the Mayo Building, you will see that all of the metered parking there is now marked as no parking, except for Calvary Church. You may park in any of these spots on Sundays. However, during the weekdays, if you park there, you must have a city-issued parking permit clearly shown on your dashboard. All of the Calvary staff and a few volunteers who are at the church often during the week have these permits.  After 5:00 pm, those spots become the same as any metered spot, and anyone can park there for free. We are still working out what to do on Saturdays.  If you do not have a permit, you are at risk of being ticketed. If you feel that you need to park in these Calvary spots on a weekday, perhaps to attend a committee meeting or for another reason that will have you in the church for a while, please contact Patty Arndt, our parish administrator, and she can issue a parking permit for you for that time.
These changes have been made by the city’s traffic engineer and Public Works Department for reasons of safety, and to prevent people from using our parking spaces to avoid paying for parking in already congested parking ramps downtown. It is good to remember that 3rd and 4th Avenues, despite the construction, are still streets that the city has legal responsibility for. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we all travel through this construction together.
