Beloved in Christ:
It will be years and years before the island of Maui will be fully recovered from the historic, devastating wildfires that caused the deaths of, as of today, over 100 people, with hundreds still missing along with the destruction of homes, business and livelihoods, and the deaths of so many animals and personal pets. As you know, the town of Lahaina was virtually destroyed. While some structures remain, Holy Innocents Episcopal Church was burned down.
I’ve discovered many connections between Calvary members and Maui. Many of you have spent regular vacation time there, traveled there for business conferences and family reunions, and hold much love in your hearts for the land and the people of Maui. This is a devastating event that has affected thousands.
There are many good organizations collecting financial contributions to aid Maui residents. One of them is our own Episcopal Relief & Development. (www.episcopalrelief.org). The ERD organization is already partnering with many aid agencies on the island, so donations to them will be put to immediate use. If you go to the webpage, you will be directed to a Hawai’i Relief Fund where you can quickly make a donation.
Also, please pray. The power of pray is awesome, and people know when they are being prayed for. There are many suggested prayers for times of natural disaster on the ERD website. Here is one that I particularly connected with. It is a Jesuit Prayer:
Holy God, you are our comfort and strength in times of sudden disaster, crises, or chaos. Surround us now with your grace and peace through storm or earthquake, fire or flood. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, sustain those who work to rescue or build, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through you, our rock and redeemer. Amen.
Consider that every time you think of the people on Maui who are filled with grief and worry, you are praying for them. Every time you offer a simple Lord, have mercy, you are praying. We are all one, in God’s inclusive creation. Let us find ways to support and uphold our brothers and sisters who are hurting so much. Let us remember how the love of God through Jesus Christ always shows grace and the promise of new life.
In peace,
Beth+
